It is that time again — time to reflect on the past year and make resolutions for the upcoming one. Resolutions are promises to ourselves to be better, happier, healthier people than we were the previous year. If you’re still not sure what resolutions to make for 2018, we have some ideas that will not only make you a happier person but also help to make our community a better place.
- Be the best pet parent you can be. Now is the time to make sure your pets are up to date on vaccinations, to schedule that spay/neuter surgery, and to order that heartworm medication. Maybe your dog needs to brush up on his training or it’s time for your cat to become an indoors-only kitty. The new year is a great time to make a list of all the ways you can be the best pet parent possible in 2018.
- Volunteer more! Volunteering is a great way to feel better about yourself, give back to the community, and meet new people. No matter where your interests lie, the Brown County Humane Society has a volunteer opportunity for you. Try walking the dogs on your day off or signing up for a morning cat care shift. There are opportunities to volunteer for shelter-sponsored events and even put your writing skills to good use for the marketing team.
- Donate to help your community. In addition to caring for Brown County’s homeless cats and dogs, the shelter provides other important services, including: low-cost spaying and neutering to prevent over-population; temporary pet food assistance for needy families; low-cost yearly and rabies vaccines for healthier animals; and more. Not only will your donations directly help others and lift your spirits, they may also be tax-deductible.
- Rescue an animal in need of a home. If you’re considering adding a pet to your family in 2018, make a resolution to adopt a shelter pet. You have the ability to give the ultimate gift of hope and happiness to a dog or cat who had to spend the holidays in the shelter. You can work with the shelter staff to find the animal that best fits your lifestyle and have the satisfaction of knowing that your decision truly saved a life.
We hope that 2018 is the best year possible for you and your family. If you’re interested in any of these opportunities above or have questions about how you can get involved, contact the Brown County Humane Society at 812-988-7362.
